1. What is SPO Tile & Melamine Primer used for?
SPO Tile & Melamine Primer is a water-based acrylic primer designed to create a strong, lasting bond on glossy, smooth, non-porous surfaces like ceramic tiles, glazed tiles, melamine cabinets, laminate furniture, and other hard-to-paint surfaces. It prevents chipping or peeling and ensures your topcoat adheres firmly, allowing you to refresh kitchens, bathrooms, and furniture without costly replacements.
2. On which surfaces can I use this primer?
It's ideal for indoor wall surfaces such as bathroom and kitchen tiles (NOT floor tiles), melamine cabinets and furniture, laminate cabinetry, glossy painted surfaces, and other smooth, non-porous areas. Make sure the surface is clean, dry, lightly abraded, and free of grease before applying. NOT suitable for shower enclosures, wet rooms, or floor tiles.
3. How do I apply SPO Tile & Melamine Primer?
Apply using a good-quality brush or short-pile roller in temperatures above 7°C. Lightly abrade particularly glossy surfaces with fine-grit sandpaper (180-240 grit) and wipe away dust or debris. Clean thoroughly with Fluxaf Power Clean. Then apply a thin, even coat of primer and let it dry fully (minimum 12 hours) before topcoating. Coverage is approximately 8 m² per litre per coat.
4. How long should I wait before painting over the primer?
The primer is ready for a topcoat after a minimum of 12 hours (overnight is recommended). At 20°C, it's touch dry in 2 hours and hard dry in 4-6 hours. Full cure is achieved after 3-5 days. Drying time can vary based on temperature and humidity, so plan accordingly.
5. Do I need a special topcoat after using SPO Tile & Melamine Primer?
Not necessarily. Once the primer is fully cured, you can apply most standard interior paints (satin, gloss, eggshell, chalk, spray paints). For kitchens and bathrooms, we recommend using a moisture-resistant topcoat for best results. You are NOT restricted to tile-specific paints—this primer allows you to use any topcoat you desire.
6. Can I use this primer on areas exposed to moisture, like showers?
NO. SPO Tile & Melamine Primer is NOT suitable for shower enclosures, wet rooms, shower trays, or areas constantly exposed to water. It's designed for wall tiles in kitchens and bathrooms that are not directly in the shower/wet area. For wet areas, use specialist wet-room coatings.
7. Can I use this primer on floor tiles?
NO. This primer is NOT suitable for floor tiles or areas subject to regular foot traffic. It's designed for wall applications only. For floor tiles, use a specialist floor tile paint system.
8. What coverage can I expect from SPO Tile & Melamine Primer?
You can expect approximately 8 m² per litre per coat, although this can vary depending on the surface's condition, tile texture, grout lines, and how thickly the primer is applied. A 1L tin covers 8 m², while a 2.5L tin covers 20 m². Even, thin coats are best for optimal coverage and adhesion.
9. Do I need to sand tiles before priming?
Yes. Light abrasion with fine-grit sandpaper (180-240 grit) is essential for good adhesion. This creates a key for the primer to grip onto. After sanding, remove all dust with a tack cloth and clean thoroughly with Fluxaf Power Clean to remove grease and soap residue.
