Before and after comparison showing old yellowed radiator transformed with SPO Radiator Paint to brilliant white finish

SPO Radiator Paint: The Complete Guide to Refreshing Your Radiators

Why Your Radiators Need Specialist Paint

Radiators work hard throughout the UK heating season, enduring constant heat cycles that can reach 70°C. Over time, this takes its toll—ordinary paint yellows, cracks and peels, leaving your radiators looking tired and dated. Standard wall emulsion simply can't cope with the expansion and contraction caused by daily heating cycles, which is why you need a specialist radiator paint formulated specifically for the job.

Whether you're refreshing yellowed radiators, covering up chips and scratches, or giving newly installed radiators a professional finish, the right paint makes all the difference to both appearance and longevity.

The Professional Solution: SPO Radiator Paint

SPO Radiator Paint shown in its front-facing tin.

SPO Radiator Paint is a specialist water-based enamel that revives tired radiators with a tough, mid-gloss finish that resists heat up to 70°C without cracking or yellowing. Backed British coating expertise, it's arguably the most reliable radiator enamel available. Its low-odour, water-thinnable acrylic formula cures hard even at high temperatures—something ordinary wall emulsion simply can't match.

How Much Do You Need? Coverage Calculator

SPO Radiator Paint covers approximately 6-8 square metres per litre. Here's a quick guide for typical UK radiators:

  • Single panel radiator (600mm x 1000mm) – 500ml will cover 2-3 radiators with two coats
  • Double panel radiator (600mm x 1000mm) – 500ml will cover 1-2 radiators with two coats
  • Large double panel (700mm x 1600mm) – 1L will cover 1-2 radiators with two coats
  • Whole house (8-10 average radiators) – 2-3 litres depending on radiator sizes

Top tip: Radiators have more surface area than you think due to fins and panels. Always buy slightly more than you calculate to ensure you have enough for two full coats.

Step-by-Step Application Guide

Step-by-step radiator painting infographic

Step 1: Turn Off and Cool Down

Turn off your radiator and allow it to cool completely. Never paint a warm or hot radiator—the paint won't adhere properly and will dry too quickly, causing brush marks and an uneven finish. Wait at least 2-3 hours after turning off the heating to ensure the radiator is completely cold to touch.

Step 2: Clean Thoroughly

Cleaning radiator surfaceClean the entire radiator surface with Fluxaf Power Clean to remove grease, dust and grime. Pay particular attention to the top and behind panels where dust accumulates. Rinse with clean water and allow to dry completely.

This step is crucial—any grease or dirt left on the surface will prevent proper paint adhesion and cause peeling later.

Step 3: Prepare the Surface

Lightly sand the entire radiator with fine sandpaper (120-180 grit) to create a key for the paint to grip. You're not trying to remove the existing paint, just roughen the surface slightly. After sanding, wipe down with a damp cloth to remove all dust.

If you have  heavily rusted areas, remove loose rust with a wire brush or If rust is difficult to remove or hard to access use Teamac Rust Converter.

Step 4: Protect Surrounding Areas

Use masking tape to protect the wall behind the radiator and lay dust sheets to protect floors and skirting boards. This preparation saves cleanup time later.

Step 5: Apply First Coat

Applying radiator paint

Stir SPO Radiator Paint thoroughly before use. Using a radiator roller or small brush, apply a thin, even coat to all surfaces. Work systematically from top to bottom, painting the front panels first, then use a slim radiator roller to reach behind the panels.

Don't overload your brush or roller—thin coats dry faster and give a better finish than thick coats. The paint is touch-dry in just one hour.

Step 6: Apply Second Coat

Once the first coat is touch-dry (approximately 1 hour), apply a second coat in the same manner. Two coats ensure complete coverage, maximum heat resistance and the best finish. Allow the second coat to dry for at least 2 hours before turning the heating back on.

Step 7: Return to Service

After the second coat has dried for 2 hours, you can turn your heating back on. The paint will continue to cure over the next few days as the radiator heats and cools, developing its full heat resistance and durability.

Professional Tips for Perfect Results

  • Remove radiators for best access – If you're confident with plumbing, removing radiators makes painting much easier
  • Use a radiator roller – The slim design reaches behind panels that brushes can't access
  • Work in good light – Use a torch to check you haven't missed any areas behind panels
  • Don't rush – Thin coats with proper drying time give far better results than thick, rushed coats
  • Ventilate well – Although low odour, good ventilation speeds drying and keeps air fresh

Common Questions Answered

Can I paint radiators while they're on?

No, radiators must be turned off and completely cold before painting. Painting warm radiators causes the paint to dry too quickly, resulting in brush marks, poor adhesion and an uneven finish.

How long before I can turn the heating back on?

You can turn the heating back on 2 hours after applying the final coat. However, for best results, leave it overnight if possible to allow the paint to cure fully.

Will the paint yellow over time?

No, SPO Radiator Paint is specifically formulated to resist yellowing even at high temperatures. Unlike ordinary gloss paint that turns cream, it stays brilliant white year after year.

Can I use it on cast iron radiators?

Yes, SPO Radiator Paint works perfectly on cast iron, steel and aluminium radiators. Just ensure proper surface preparation for best adhesion.
