What Our Customers Say

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Transformed our driveway in a weekend"
We used Anthracite on our concrete driveway and the result is stunning. Applied two coats on Saturday, touch dry within the hour each time, and by Sunday evening it looked like a completely different property. The texture gives a really solid, grippy feel underfoot. Delivery was next day as promised. — Claire Hutchinson, Homeowner, Surrey

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Best value driveway paint we have found" We have used this on several customer driveways now and the results are consistently excellent. The EV Blue is a real head-turner and clients love the finish. Covers well, dries fast and the slip resistance is reassuring for older customers. Will continue to use on all our driveway jobs. — Mark Delaney, Driveway Contractor, Bristol

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Tile Red looks fantastic on our Victorian terrace"
Our concrete path and front step were looking very tired. Two coats of Tile Red and they look brand new. The pre-aggregated texture is subtle but you can feel the grip, which was important for us as we have elderly relatives visiting. Really pleased with the result. — Patricia Nolan, Homeowner, Edinburgh

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Used on a commercial car park — held up brilliantly" We applied Black Coo-Var Driveway Paint to a small commercial car park area for a retail client. Six months on and it is still looking sharp with no fading or lifting. The water-based formula meant we could work without strong fumes and clean up was straightforward. Excellent product. — James Whitmore, Facilities Manager, Manchester

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Anthracite finish looks premium — very impressed" Refreshed our block paving surround and garage apron with Anthracite. The coverage was better than expected and the finish is really smart — looks far more expensive than it was. Dried quickly between coats and was fully hard within the week. Would recommend to anyone looking to improve their kerb appeal. — David Osei, Homeowner, Leeds

✅ This product is ideal if you need to:

• Restore colour and grip to a faded or tired concrete or tarmac driveway
• Improve kerb appeal without the cost and disruption of full resurfacing
• Apply a slip-resistant finish that is safe underfoot and under tyre in wet conditions
• Complete the job quickly — touch dry in 1 hour, second coat the same day
• Use a water-based, low-VOC product that is easy to apply and clean up
• Choose from a range of colours to complement your property

❌ This product is NOT suitable if you need to:

• The surface is unstable, crumbling or heavily cracked — the surface must be sound before painting
• The surface or air temperature is at or below 7°C during painting and drying
• You require a colour outside the available range (Anthracite, Black, Tile Red, EV Blue, EV Green only)
• The surface has not been properly cleaned and degreased — contamination will cause adhesion failure
• You are using airless spray equipment not rated for abrasive coatings — the aggregate can be abrasive to spray tips; check manufacturer recommendations before use

Coo-Var Driveway Paint is a water-based, pre-aggregated driveway coating formulated to add colour, restore grip and protect concrete, tarmac and asphalt surfaces. Developed by Coo-Var — a British coatings manufacturer with over 115 years of heritage — it delivers a durable, slip-resistant matt finish that transforms tired driveways without the disruption and cost of full resurfacing.

The very fine aggregate within the formulation provides a textured, non-slip surface that has been independently tested to PTV 68 Dry (Low Risk) and 58 Wet (Low Risk) — giving homeowners and contractors confidence that the finished surface is safe underfoot and under tyre in all weathers. The water-based formula keeps VOC content to a maximum of 140 g/litre, making it a lower-odour, more environmentally considerate choice than solvent-based alternatives.

Available in five colours — Anthracite, Black, Tile Red, EV Blue and EV Green — in a 5L tin, Coo-Var Driveway Paint gives you the flexibility to complement any property style, from classic black tarmac to contemporary anthracite or bold EV-inspired finishes. It can be applied by brush, short-pile roller or airless spray, and touch dries in just 1 hour, allowing a second coat the same day.

Key Benefits

• Slip-resistant pre-aggregated finish — independently tested PTV 68 Dry and 58 Wet (both Low Risk)
• Water-based, low VOC — max 140 g/litre, non-flammable, easier to use and clean up than solvent alternatives

• No resurfacing required — rejuvenates existing concrete, tarmac and asphalt at a fraction of the cost
• Five colours available — Anthracite, Black, Tile Red, EV Blue and EV Green

Coo-Var Driveway Paint is an excellent choice for adding colour, grip and protection to a wide range of exterior surfaces and settings:

• Residential Driveways — Rejuvenate faded or tired concrete, tarmac and asphalt driveways with a fresh, durable matt finish. Available in Anthracite, Black, Tile Red, EV Blue and EV Green to complement any property style. Touch dry in 1 hour and second coat the same day, so the job can be completed over a weekend.

• Garage Aprons & Forecourts
— Protect and smarten the area directly in front of garages and outbuildings. The pre-aggregated, slip-resistant finish provides grip underfoot and under tyre, reducing the risk of slips in wet conditions.

Paths, Steps & External Walkways — Apply to concrete and tarmac paths and steps to restore colour and improve grip. Independently slip tested to PTV 68 Dry and 58 Wet (both Low Risk), making it a practical choice for areas used by elderly or less mobile residents.

• Car Parks & Commercial Hardstandings — Suitable for small commercial car parks, retail forecourts and hardstandings where a cost-effective, durable surface coating is required. Water-based formula allows application with minimal fumes in occupied or semi-occupied settings.

• Block Paving Surrounds & Hardstandings — Use on concrete surrounds and hardstanding areas adjacent to block paving to create a consistent, smart finish across the whole driveway area.

• Driveway Renovation & Kerb Appeal Projects — A cost-effective alternative to full resurfacing for homeowners looking to improve the appearance and value of their property. Covers existing concrete and tarmac in one day without the disruption of excavation or relaying.

Coverage: 5–9 m² per litre at 35 micron dry film thickness (applied by brush or roller)

Coverage per size

• 5L tin: Covers approximately 25–45 m² per coat on a smooth, prepared surface

Recommended coats

• Minimum 2 coats recommended for full colour depth, opacity and durability
• First coat on porous or bare concrete surfaces should be thinned 5% with clean water to act as a primer coat
• Second and subsequent coats applied direct from the tin

Example calculations

• For a standard single driveway of approximately 25 m², you will need approximately 1 x 5L tin per coat
• For 2 coats on a 25 m² driveway, you will need approximately 2 x 5L tins

• For a double driveway of approximately 50 m², you will need approximately 1–2 x 5L tins per coat depending on surface porosity
• For 2 coats on a 50 m² driveway, you will need approximately 3–4 x 5L tins

• For a garage apron or forecourt of approximately 15 m², you will need approximately 1 x 5L tin for 2 coats

Practical coverage may be lower depending on surface porosity, roughness and application method. Rough or porous tarmac and concrete will absorb more paint than a smooth or previously painted surface. For accurate project planning, we recommend ordering 10–15% extra to account for surface variation.

Surface Preparation

All Surfaces
• Surfaces must be sound, clean and free from contaminants including oil, grease, dirt and loose material
• Do not apply if the surface or air temperature is at or below 7°C during painting or drying
• Mix the paint well before use

Concrete
• All bare concrete surfaces should be abraded or treated with Coo-Var Acid Etch to provide a good key
• After abrading or etching, apply a first coat thinned 5% with clean water before applying full coats
• Newly laid concrete should be left to cure before painting — allow 1 month per 3cm of slab thickness
• Very porous concrete surfaces should also receive a first coat thinned 5% with clean water

Tarmac and Asphalt
• Ensure the surface is stable, sound and free from contaminants
• New tarmac should be allowed to weather and stabilise before painting

Existing Painted Surfaces
• Clean, degrease and abrade to ensure an adequate key
• Remove all loose and flaking material and treat bare areas as new substrate

Application

1. Mix the paint thoroughly before use and periodically during application
2. Apply by brush, short-pile roller or airless spray (nozzle size 0.021", pressure 1000–1300 psi)
3. Note: the aggregate in this product can be abrasive to spray equipment — check your spray tip manufacturer's recommendations before use
4. Apply the first coat — on porous or bare concrete surfaces, thin 5% with clean water; on other surfaces apply direct
5. Allow a minimum of 6 hours between coats
6. Apply a minimum of 2 coats for full colour depth and durability
7. Clean tools immediately after use with clean water

Drying Times (at 20°C)

• Touch dry: 1 hour
• Hard dry: 4 hours
• Full hardness: 5–7 days

Drying times will be longer in cold or humid conditions. Do not apply if temperature will be at or below 7°C during painting or drying.

Important Notes

• Exterior use on stable asphalt, concrete and tarmac only
• Do not apply to unstable, crumbling or heavily cracked surfaces
• Minimum 2 coats required for full performance
• Full hardness is achieved in 5–7 days — avoid heavy vehicle traffic during this period
• This product is non-flammable

These products are commonly combined for best long-term results.

What surfaces can Coo-Var Driveway Paint be applied to?
It is suitable for stable asphalt, concrete and tarmac. The surface must be sound, clean and free from oil, grease and loose material. It is not suitable for unstable, crumbling or heavily cracked surfaces.

Do I need a primer?
Not a separate primer product. On porous or bare concrete surfaces, the first coat should be thinned 5% with clean water to act as a primer coat. Bare concrete must also be abraded or treated with Coo-Var Acid Etch before painting.

What colours are available?
Anthracite, Black, Tile Red, EV Blue and EV Green — all available in a 5L tin.

What pack size is available?
Coo-Var Driveway Paint is available in a 5L tin.

How many coats do I need?
A minimum of 2 coats is recommended for full colour depth and durability. On porous or bare concrete, the first coat should be thinned 5% with clean water.

How long do I need to wait between coats?

Allow a minimum of 6 hours between coats at 20°C. Drying times will be longer in cold or humid conditions.

How long before I can drive on it?
The paint is touch dry in 1 hour and hard dry in 4 hours at 20°C. Full hardness is achieved in 5–7 days — avoid heavy vehicle traffic during this period.

How much does a 5L tin cover?
A 5L tin covers approximately 25–45 m² per coat at 35 micron dry film thickness on a smooth, prepared surface. Coverage will be lower on rough or porous surfaces. We recommend ordering 10–15% extra to account for surface variation.

Can I apply it with a sprayer?
Yes, using airless spray equipment with a 0.021" nozzle at 1000–1300 psi. Note that the aggregate in this product can be abrasive to spray tips — check your equipment manufacturer's recommendations before use.

Is it slip resistant?
Yes. Coo-Var Driveway Paint has been independently tested and achieved a PTV of 68 Dry (Low Risk) and 58 Wet (Low Risk). A site assessment is recommended to determine actual slip risk in your specific environment.

What temperature do I need to apply it?
Do not apply if the surface or air temperature is at or below 7°C during painting or drying. Low temperature and high humidity will adversely affect application, drying and performance.

How do I prepare new concrete?
New concrete should be left to cure before painting — allow 1 month per 3cm of slab thickness. After curing, abrade or treat with Coo-Var Acid Etch, then apply a first coat thinned 5% with clean water before applying full coats.

How do I clean my tools?
Clean brushes, rollers and spray equipment immediately after use with clean water. Do not allow the paint to dry on tools.
