Coverage & How Much Do I Need

Coverage: Approximately 12 m² per litre per coat (at recommended 38 µm dry film thickness)

Coverage per size

• 500ml: Covers approx. 6 m² per coat
• 1 litre: Covers approx. 12 m² per coat
• 5 litres: Covers approx. 60 m² per coat

Recommended coats

• 1-2 coats (single coat usually sufficient; apply second coat if needed)
• Heat curing required after each coat (heat above 220°C for 20-30 minutes)

Example calculations

• For a standard wood-burning stove (approx. 2-3 m² surface area), you will need approximately 200-250ml per coat
• For 1 coat, one 500ml tin covers 2-3 stoves

• For a fireplace surround (approx. 5-6 m² surface area), you will need approximately 420-500ml per coat
• For 1 coat, one 1L tin covers 2 fireplace surrounds

• For fire surrounds, stove bodies, or hot pipework totalling approximately 10 m², you will need approximately 850ml per coat
• For 1 coat, one 1L tin covers this area

Practical coverage may be lower depending on metal type, surface condition, texture, and application method. Rough or porous metal may require more paint. For accurate project planning, we recommend ordering 10-15% extra to account for surface variation.

How To Apply

Surface Preparation

• Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, and free from grease, oil, rust, and contaminants
• Use Coo-Var Degreaser to clean and degrease metal surfaces thoroughly
• Bare steel should be free from rust and mill scale
• For any rust that cannot be removed, use Teamac Rust Converter to treat rust before painting
• Blast cleaning to SA 2½ standard (Swedish Standard) is recommended where possible for optimal adhesion
• Pay particular attention to welds, edges, corners, nuts, and bolts (rust-prone areas)
• Ensure surface and air temperature is above 5°C (minimum application temperature)
• Provide adequate ventilation during application and heat curing

Application

• Stir paint thoroughly before use
• Apply using a good-quality brush or short-pile roller
• Do NOT thin—the paint is ready to use
• Apply 1 full coat evenly, ensuring complete coverage of all metal surfaces
• Apply a second coat if needed for enhanced coverage or appearance
• Avoid application in damp, humid, or freezing conditions

Drying & Heat Curing Times (at 20°C)

• Touch dry: 10-20 minutes
• Hard dry: 20 minutes
• Heat curing: The coating only fully cures once heated slowly to above 220°C for 20-30 minutes
• Initial heating may produce light smoke or fumes—ensure good ventilation during first burn

Heat Curing Procedure (Essential):

1. Allow paint to air-dry for minimum 20 minutes
2. Gradually heat the surface to above 220°C
3. Maintain temperature above 220°C for 20-30 minutes
4. Allow to cool naturally
5. The coating will vitrify (harden permanently) during this process

Important Notes

• Designed for indirect heat up to 600°C (not for direct flame contact)
• Suitable for fire surrounds, hot pipes, stoves, BBQs, flues, and similar applications
• Film remains thermoplastic (soft) until heat-cured above 220°C
• Heat curing is essential for permanent protection—coating will not fully cure without heat
• Solvent-based paint—requires adequate ventilation
• Flash point: 25°C (closed cup)—keep away from heat sources before application

FAQ's

1. What is SPO Heat Resistant Black Paint used for?

SPO Heat Resistant Black Paint is specifically formulated to protect metal surfaces exposed to high temperatures—such as wood-burning stoves, log burners, fireplaces, BBQs, chimeneas, flues, and hot pipework—by withstanding indirect heat up to 600°C. Provides rust protection and satin black finish.

2. What does "600°C heat resistant" mean?

This paint can withstand continuous indirect heat exposure up to 600°C without peeling, blistering, cracking, or discolouring. This makes it ideal for stoves, BBQs, fireplaces, and industrial high-temperature metalwork. Not suitable for direct flame contact.

3. What is heat curing and why is it required?

Heat curing is the process of heating the painted surface above 220°C for 20-30 minutes to permanently harden (vitrify) the coating. This creates a rock-hard, heat-proof barrier. Without heat curing, the coating remains soft and will not provide permanent protection. Essential for full performance.

4. How does the satin finish benefit high-temperature surfaces?

The satin finish offers a sleek, polished low-sheen look whilst helping resist peeling and blistering under extreme heat, ensuring your surfaces remain attractive over time. Professional appearance without high gloss.

5. Can I apply this paint with a brush or spray?

No, spray application is not recommended. Apply SPO Heat Resistant Black Paint using a good-quality brush or short-pile roller only. Do not thin the paint. Choose brush or roller based on your preference and the size or shape of the surface you're covering.

6. Is it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use?

Yes. Whilst it's primarily designed for indoor applications like fireplaces and stoves, it can also be used outdoors on surfaces where high heat tolerance is required (BBQs, chimeneas, outdoor fire pits). Make sure the area is properly prepared and follow all safety precautions.

7. How many coats should I apply?

Typically, 1-2 coats are recommended. Single coat application is usually sufficient for most surfaces. Apply a second coat if needed for enhanced coverage or appearance. Heat cure after each coat (heat above 220°C for 20-30 minutes).

8. What is the coverage rate?

One litre of paint covers approximately 12 m² per coat, though this may vary based on the substrate's condition and your application method. A 500ml tin covers approximately 6 m² (2-3 stoves). Preparing the surface properly ensures you get the best coverage.

9. Does it require special surface preparation?

Yes. Ensure the surface is clean, rust-free, and thoroughly dry before painting. Remove rust with wire brushing or use Teamac Rust Converter for stubborn rust. Blast cleaning to SA 2½ is recommended where possible. Always follow the paint's drying and heat curing instructions for long-lasting results.

10. Can I use this on radiators?

No. This paint requires heat curing above 220°C to fully cure. Radiators typically only reach 70°C, which is insufficient for curing. Use SPO Radiator Paint instead for radiators and low-temperature metalwork.
