Customer Reviews

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "My walls didn't have to be bone-dry—painted them quickly, no flaking! Standard emulsion kept peeling off our damp basement walls. This bonded perfectly and hasn't flaked at all after 6 months. Finally found a paint that works on damp surfaces." — Sienna W., Homeowner, Truro

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Saved me weeks of waiting after a flood. Minimal smell, easy to apply, and walls look great. Painted whilst walls were still damp—other paints would have flaked off. The breathable formula really works. Back to normal in 2 days instead of 2 weeks." — Leo P., Homeowner, Taunton

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Used this on damp cellar walls in our rental property where standard paint kept failing. No flaking, no peeling—it bonds to damp surfaces brilliantly. The anti-mould component works too. Tenants are happy and I avoided costly replastering." — Freya S., Landlord, Swindon

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Applied to water-damaged walls in our hotel after a pipe leak. Couldn't wait for walls to dry fully—this bonded to damp plaster where emulsion would have flaked. Touch dry in 2 hours, topcoated the next day. Room back in service immediately." — Archie D., Hotel Manager, Slough

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "As a property maintenance contractor, I use this for all damp wall jobs. Standard paints build up pressure and flake off—this releases moisture gradually and bonds permanently. Clients love that we can paint damp walls without waiting. My go-to solution." — Poppy L., Maintenance Contractor, Watford

Is This Product Right For Me

✅ This product is ideal if you need to:

• Paint walls affected by penetrating or rising damp where standard paints flake off due to moisture pressure build-up

• Paint walls and ceilings that aren't fully dry yet after leaks or flooding (standard paints would fail and flake)

• Bond to damp surfaces with a breathable formula that releases moisture gradually instead of trapping it

• Paint over water stains and damp marks without them bleeding through the finish

• Prevent the flaking and peeling that occurs when ordinary paints trap moisture behind the coating

• Prevent mould and fungal growth on damp-affected surfaces with biocidal protection

• Resist efflorescence (white salt deposits) on damp walls and ceilings

• Create a primer/sealer layer on damp surfaces before applying topcoats

❌ This product is NOT suitable if you need to:

• Paint walls or ceilings that are actively leaking or fully saturated (surface must be damp, not saturated)

• Use the paint without first resolving structural damp, plumbing faults, or rising damp issues (this treats symptoms, not causes)

• Apply to external walls or outdoor surfaces (interior use only)

• Use paint alone to cure the underlying cause of damp (source of damp must be identified and repaired)

• Apply in temperatures below 5°C (minimum application temperature required)

About The Product

SPO Anti-Damp Paint lets you coat damp walls and ceilings that other paints can't handle, preventing the flaking and peeling that occurs when standard paints trap moisture. Whilst ordinary emulsions build up pressure behind the coating and eventually flake off, this specialist moisture-reactive resin bonds to damp surfaces and releases moisture gradually through its breathable formula.

This unique capability means you can paint walls affected by damp problems AND paint walls that aren't fully dry yet—wiping out ugly stains and blocking future mould before it costs you a penny more. Faster redecoration means quicker reopenings, lower repair bills, and happier occupants who can get on with business, or life, without musty smells or health worries.

Backed by over 100 years of British coating innovation and manufactured in the UK to exacting standards, it's arguably the most effective damp-blocking paint money can buy.

Key Benefits

• Paint Whilst Damp – Roll straight onto wet surfaces that other paints can't handle. Finish rooms weeks sooner, slashing labour time and downtime. No need to wait for surfaces to dry completely.

• Bonds to Damp Surfaces
– Specialist moisture-reactive resin bonds to damp walls where standard paints fail. Prevents the flaking and peeling caused by moisture pressure build-up behind ordinary paints.

• Breathable Formula – Releases moisture gradually through the coating instead of trapping it. Prevents pressure build-up that causes standard paints to flake off. Long-lasting protection without peeling.

Coverage & How Much Do I Need

Coverage: Approximately 9 m² per litre per coat (at recommended dry film thickness)

Coverage per size

• 1 litre: Covers approx. 9 m² per coat
• 2.5 litres: Covers approx. 22.5 m² per coat

Recommended coats

• 1-2 coats (1 coat for general damp; 2 coats for severe damp or heavy staining)

Example calculations

• For a 3 m² damp patch on a wall, you will need approximately 330ml per coat
• For 1 coat, one 1L tin covers 3 damp patches of this size

• For a 9 m² damp wall, you will need approximately 1 litre per coat
• For 1 coat, one 1L tin covers this area

• For a 20 m² ceiling with water damage, you will need approximately 2.2 litres per coat
• For 1 coat, one 2.5L tin covers this area

Practical coverage may be lower depending on surface porosity, texture, and severity of damp. Porous plaster or severe damp may require more paint. For accurate project planning, we recommend ordering 10-15% extra to account for surface variation.

How To Apply

Surface Preparation

• Ensure all surfaces are clean, sound, and free from grease, oil, or contaminants
• Use Fluxaf Power Clean to clean surfaces
• Scrape and brush to remove any loose or flaking material
• Lightly abrade glossy surfaces with fine-grit sandpaper (180-240 grit) to provide a good key
• Treat mould or lichen with Fluxaf Mould and Mildew Remover, scrub clean, then retreat if required
• Product can be applied to damp surfaces, but do NOT apply to saturated surfaces (surface should be damp, not dripping wet)
• **IMPORTANT:** Identify and repair sources of damp (e.g., plumbing faults, structural issues, rising damp) before application—this paint treats symptoms, not causes
• Provide adequate ventilation during application and drying

Application

• Stir paint thoroughly before use
• Apply using a good-quality brush, short-pile roller, or spray
• Thin with SPO Thinners if required (maximum 5%)
• Apply 1 full coat evenly as a primer/sealer coat
• Allow 12 hours or overnight before overcoating
• Apply a 2nd coat if damp is particularly severe or staining is heavy
• Avoid application in damp, humid, or freezing conditions

Drying & Curing Times (at 20°C)

• Touch dry: 2 hours
• Hard dry: 8 hours
• Recoat/overcoat time: Minimum 12 hours or overnight
• Can be overcoated with suitable breathable topcoats or wall coverings once dry

Drying times may be extended in cooler temperatures or high humidity. Ensure adequate ventilation during application and drying.

FAQ's

1. What is SPO Anti-Damp Paint used for?

SPO Anti-Damp Paint is formulated to paint damp walls and ceilings that standard paints can't handle. Whilst ordinary emulsions build up pressure behind the coating and eventually flake off, this specialist moisture-reactive resin bonds to damp surfaces and releases moisture gradually through its breathable formula. This means you can paint walls affected by damp problems AND paint walls that aren't fully dry yet after leaks or flooding.

2. Why do standard paints flake off damp walls?

Standard paints trap moisture behind the coating, causing pressure to build up. This pressure eventually forces the paint to flake and peel off. SPO Anti-Damp Paint is different—it bonds to damp surfaces and releases moisture gradually through its breathable formula, preventing pressure build-up and ensuring long-lasting adhesion without flaking.

3. Can I apply this paint on actively damp walls and ceilings?

Yes. One of its main benefits is that it can be applied to damp surfaces (not saturated), which is especially useful in areas affected by rising damp, penetrating damp, leaks, or floods. It allows you to restore the space faster without lengthy drying times.

4. Does it help prevent efflorescence and mould?

Yes. SPO Anti-Damp Paint contains a biocidal component that helps prevent mould and fungal growth. It also resists efflorescence—those white salt deposits that can form on damp walls and ceilings—so your walls and ceilings remain cleaner and fresher.

5. How do I apply it?

Use a good-quality brush, short-pile roller, or spray, depending on your preference and the size of the area. Ensure the wall is free from loose debris or flaking paint, and follow the recommended drying time of around 12 hours before adding a breathable topcoat.

6. Is it really oil-based but low odour?

Yes. Despite being a solvent-based formula, SPO Anti-Damp Paint is formulated to minimise fumes and odours, making it more comfortable to apply indoors than many traditional oil-based paints. Adequate ventilation is still required.

7. Can I paint over it with standard emulsion?

After the paint has fully dried (typically 12 hours or overnight), you can apply a breathable topcoat or emulsion. The primer layer offered by SPO Anti-Damp Paint helps ensure a smoother finish and stronger adhesion for your topcoat.

8. What coverage can I expect?

Coverage is approximately 9 m² per litre per coat, though this depends on the wall's condition, porosity, and how generously you apply the paint. For maximum effectiveness, use thin, even coats and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

9. Will this paint cure the damp problem permanently?

No. This paint treats the symptoms of damp (staining, mould, efflorescence) but does not cure the underlying cause. You must identify and repair the source of damp (plumbing faults, structural issues, rising damp) before painting for a permanent solution.

10. Can I use this on external walls?

No. SPO Anti-Damp Paint is designed for interior use only. For external damp walls, you'll need a specialist exterior damp-proof paint or masonry treatment.

11. How long do I need to wait before topcoating?

Wait a minimum of 12 hours (or overnight) before applying a breathable topcoat or emulsion. This ensures the primer layer has dried and cured properly for optimal adhesion and performance.
