Coverage & How Much Do I Need

Coverage: Approximately 6–10m² per litre per coat

Coverage per size

  • A 1L tin will cover approximately 6–10m² per coat
  • A 2.5L tin will cover approximately 15–25m² per coat

Recommended coats

  • 2

Example calculation

  • For a 3m² floor area you will need roughly 0.3–0.5L per coat

Practical coverage may be lower depending on surface porosity, texture, and application method.

How To Apply

Surface Preparation

  • Ensure all surfaces are clean, dry, sound, and free from grease or contaminants using Coo-Var Oil Remover and Coo-Var Degreaser.

Concrete surfaces:

  • Smooth, power-floated, or granolithic concrete must be roughened to provide a good key
  • Prepare by mechanical abrasion, blasting, or chemical etching using Coo-Var Acid Etch
  • New concrete must be fully cured (up to 3 months) before coating
  • Prime with a 10% thinned coat of SPO Floor Paint and allow to dry

Wood, metal, and GRP:

Prepare and prime with a suitable primer for the substrate, such as:

  • SPO All Metals Primer for metal
  • SPO General Purpose Primer to prime wood
  • GRP does not need a primer just make sure the cleaning process is followed and the substrate is sound and abraded

Previously painted surfaces:

  • Clean, degrease, and abrade to create a good key
  • Remove loose or flaking material and treat bare areas as new substrate
  • Provide adequate ventilation during application and drying

Application

  • Stir well before use, ensuring the aggregate is evenly distributed
  • Do not use a mechanical shaker
  • Apply using a brush or short/medium pile roller
  • Do not thin
  • Apply 2 full coats of SPO Anti-Slip Floor Paint
  • Allow a minimum of 16 hours (overnight) before recoating or light use

Drying & Curing

  • Touch dry: approximately 6 hours at 20°C
  • Hard dry: approximately 24 hours at 20°C
  • Full hardness achieved after 5–7 days

Notes

  • Suitable for indoor and outdoor use
  • Designed for areas requiring improved slip resistance
  • Suitable for foot traffic, light truck use, and occasional heavy truck traffic
  • Low temperatures and high humidity will adversely affect drying and performance

FAQ's

1. What is SPO Anti-Slip Floor Paint used for?

SPO Anti-Slip Floor Paint is a heavily aggregated, oil-based coating designed to create a grippy surface on floors, ramps, steps, and other high-risk areas. Its textured finish minimises slip hazards, making it ideal for busy industrial sites or home workshops.

2. Can I use this paint both indoors and outdoors?

Yes. The oil-based formula provides robust protection and is suitable for interior and exterior projects, resisting wear from foot traffic, light vehicles, and changing weather conditions.

3. How do I apply this paint?

You can apply it using a brush or short pile roller. Stir thoroughly to ensure the aggregate is evenly distributed, then coat the surface in thin, even layers. Follow the recommended overcoat time of roughly 16 hours if a second coat is required.

4. Will it adhere to previously painted floors?

Absolutely. As long as the existing paint is stable, clean, and lightly abraded, SPO Anti-Slip Floor Paint should bond effectively. Be sure to remove any loose or peeling paint, and degrease the surface for best results.

5. Are custom colours available?

Yes. SPO Anti-Slip Floor Paint can be tinted to match over 2,000 RAL, BS, and NCS shades, with a minimum order of 10 litres for custom tints. This flexibility lets you meet safety codes or match branding requirements.

6. How long does it take to dry?

The paint is typically ready for re-coating in about 16 hours. Drying times can vary based on temperature, humidity, and how thickly you apply the product.

7. What coverage can I expect?

Coverage ranges from 6–10 m² per litre, depending on the surface’s condition and the thickness of your coats. More porous or textured floors may require additional paint to achieve uniform slip resistance.
