What Our Customers Say

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Transformed our mahogany dining table — grain looks stunning" Applied three coats of Coo-Var Danish Oil to a bare mahogany dining table. The tung oil content really brings out the depth of colour in the grain — it looks far better than any varnish I have used. Touch dry in 4 hours meant I could apply all three coats over a weekend. — Susan Cartwright, Homeowner, Berkshire

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Our go-to oil for kitchen worktops" We have been specifying Coo-Var Danish Oil for kitchen worktops on all our joinery projects for two years. It provides excellent water resistance and the slight-gloss finish looks very professional. Coverage is better than expected and it dries quickly between coats. — Andrew Forsythe, Kitchen Fitter, Sheffield

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Used on garden furniture — still looking great after a full season" Applied two coats to our teak garden furniture at the start of the season. The oil soaked in beautifully and the finish has held up well through a full summer of use and rain. Very easy to apply with a cloth and the results are excellent. — Patricia Drummond, Homeowner, Hampshire

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Excellent on exterior doors — great water resistance" Applied to a set of hardwood exterior doors before hanging. The slight-gloss finish looks very smart and the water resistance is excellent — water beads off the surface rather than soaking in. Touch dry in 4 hours made the job very straightforward. — Colin Ashby, Joiner, Staffordshire

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "Reliable product — consistent results every time" We use Coo-Var Danish Oil on all our woodwork projects from worktops to garden furniture. It consistently delivers a beautiful natural finish and the coverage rate is excellent. The 500ml tin is the right size for most of our smaller jobs. Delivery is always next day. — Wendy Holloway, Interior Designer, Bristol

Coverage: 14 m² per litre at 35 micron dry film thickness

Coverage per size

• 500ml: Covers approximately 7 m² per coat

Note: Coverage is dependent on the porosity and condition of the wood. Dry, weathered or very porous timber will absorb more oil and reduce coverage. New or freshly sanded wood will also absorb more on the first coat.

Recommended coats

• 2–3 coats are recommended for best results — the first coat seals and nourishes, subsequent coats build the protective finish
• Recoat after a minimum of 12 hours or overnight at 20°C
• Additional maintenance coats can be applied as required

Example calculations

• For a kitchen worktop of 3 m²: a 500ml tin will cover 2 coats
• For a set of garden furniture (approximately 5–8 m²): a 500ml tin will cover 1 coat; 2 x 500ml for 2 coats
• For a set of interior doors (approximately 4 m²): a 500ml tin will cover 1–2 coats

For accurate project planning, we recommend ordering 10–15% extra to account for surface variation and porosity.

Surface Preparation

• Ensure the surface is clean, dry and free from wax, oil, grease and dirt before applying
• Use sandpaper to remove any unwanted old coatings or paints
• For weathered or greyed exterior wood, clean and revive with Lacq Turbogel Wood Reviver Gel before applying Danish Oil
• Allow the surface to dry fully after cleaning before applying

Application

1. Mix the oil well before use
2. Apply by brush or lint-free cloth to the prepared wood surface
3. Apply generously, working the oil well into the grain
4. Allow to penetrate, then wipe off any excess that has not been absorbed
5. Allow to dry — touch dry in 4 hours, recoat after a minimum of 12 hours or overnight
6. Apply 2–3 coats for best results, following the same method for each coat
7. If thinning is required, thin with Thinners 14 at a maximum of 5%
8. Clean brushes and cloths immediately after use with Thinners 14

Drying Times (at 20°C)

• Touch dry: 4 hours
• Hard dry: 8 hours
• Full hardness: 5–7 days
• Recoat interval: 12 hours or overnight

Drying times will be longer in cold or humid conditions.

Important Notes

• Apply direct to prepared wood — no separate primer required
• Thin with Thinners 14 at a maximum of 5% if required
• Clean equipment with Thinners 14 immediately after use — do not use water
