Coverage & How Much Do I Need

Coverage: Approx. 13–15 m² per litre per coat (at recommended 40-45 µm dry film thickness)

Per Tin Coverage (Single Coat):
• 2.5 litres: Covers approx. 32.5–37.5 m²
• 5 litres: Covers approx. 65–75 m²

Recommended Application: 2 coats for optimal protection and finish

Example Calculation:
For a 50 m² garage floor, you would need approximately 7–8 litres total for 2 coats. This equals either:
• Three 2.5L tins (7.5L total), OR
• One 5L tin + one 2.5L tin (7.5L total)

*Coverage may vary depending on surface porosity, texture, and application method. Porous or rough surfaces (such as unsealed concrete) may require more paint. For accurate project planning, we recommend ordering 10-15% extra to account for surface variation and touch-ups.

How To Apply

Surface Preparation:

Concrete & Masonry:

  • Ensure surface is fully cured (minimum 28 days for new concrete)
  • Remove all dust, dirt, oil, grease, and loose material using Coo-Var Universal Degreaser or Oil Remover
  • Etch porous or smooth concrete with Coo-Var Acid Etch to improve adhesion
  • Repair cracks and holes with suitable concrete filler and allow to cure
  • Surface must be clean, dry, and free from moisture (test for rising damp if necessary)

Wood:

  • Sand surface to remove old paint, varnish, or contamination
  • Fll gaps and holes with wood filler
  • Prime bare wood with suitable wood primer before applying floor paint or thin first coat with SPO Floor Paint Thinners
  • Ensure surface is clean, dry, and dust-free

Metal:

  • Remove rust, scale, and old paint by wire brushing or sanding, treat any stubborn rust with Teamac Rust Converter
  • Degrease with Coo-Var Universal Degreaser
  • Apply Teamac Zinc Phosphate Primer to bare metal and allow to dry fully
  • Ensure surface is clean, dry, and free from contamination

Previously Painted Floors:

  • Ensure existing coating is sound and well-adhered
  • Remove any flaking or peeling paint
  • Lightly sand or de-gloss the surface to improve adhesion
  • Clean thoroughly to remove dust and grease

Application:

  • Stir paint thoroughly before use and occasionally during application
  • Apply in temperatures between 10°C and 25°C for optimal drying
  • Use a good-quality brush or short-pile roller (thin up to 10% with SPO Floor Paint Thinners if required)
  • Apply first coat evenly, working paint well into the surface
  • Aim for a wet film thickness of approximately 75 µm (this will dry to 40-45 µm)
  • Allow to dry for minimum 16 hours (overnight) before applying second coat
  • Apply second coat in the same manner for optimal protection and finish
  • Avoid application in damp, humid, or freezing conditions

Drying & Curing Times (at 20°C):

  • Touch dry: 2 hours
  • Hard dry: 12 hours
  • Recoat time: Minimum 16 hours / overnight recommended
  • Light foot traffic: 24 hours
  • Full cure: 5-7 days (avoid heavy traffic or chemical exposure during this period)

*Drying times may be extended in cooler temperatures or high humidity. Do not apply if rain is expected within 24 hours for exterior applications.

FAQ's

Q: What is SPO Floor Paint used for?
A: SPO Floor Paint is a solvent-based, hard-wearing coating designed for high foot-traffic areas including garage floors, workshop floors, warehouse floors, commercial floors, and industrial floors. It provides a durable, semi-gloss finish with excellent resistance to scuffs and daily wear. Suitable for both interior and exterior applications on concrete, masonry, wood, and suitably primed metal surfaces.

Q: Can I use SPO Floor Paint outdoors?

A: Yes, SPO Floor Paint is suitable for both interior and exterior floors including patios, driveways, outdoor walkways, and external workshop areas as long as they are suitably prepared and the right conditions allow. The solvent-based formula provides excellent weather resistance and can withstand frequent foot traffic and light vehicle use. Ensure surface is dry and avoid application if rain is expected within 24 hours.

Q: How do I apply SPO Floor Paint?
A: Apply by brush or short-pile roller in temperatures between 10°C and 25°C. Stir thoroughly before use. Ensure the surface is clean, dry, and properly prepared (see Application & Maintenance section). Apply first coat evenly, allow to dry overnight (minimum 16 hours), then apply second coat. The paint can be thinned up to 10% with SPO Floor Paint Thinners if required. Coverage is approximately 13-15 m² per litre per coat.

Q: How long does SPO Floor Paint take to dry before re-coating?
A: At 20°C, SPO Floor Paint is touch dry in 2 hours and hard dry in 12 hours. For re-coating, wait a minimum of 16 hours (overnight is recommended). Light foot traffic is safe after 24 hours, but allow 5-7 days for full cure before subjecting the floor to heavy traffic. Drying times may be longer in cooler temperatures or high humidity.

Q: Can I choose a custom colour for SPO Floor Paint?
A: Yes, SPO Floor Paint can be tinted to over 2,000 RAL, BS, and NCS shades to match your specific requirements. In addition to our 11 standard colours (White, Forest Green, Black, Light Grey, Tile Red, Flint Grey, Dark Grey, Yellow, Steel Blue, Stone Grey, Anthracite), we offer a custom colour matching service on a minimum order of 5L and an extra charge is added. Contact us for a quote.

Q: Does SPO Floor Paint adhere well to previously painted surfaces?

A: Yes, SPO Floor Paint works well over most single-pack floor paints and existing coatings, provided the existing coating is sound, well-adhered, and in good condition. Lightly sand or de-gloss the surface to improve adhesion, then clean thoroughly to remove dust and grease. If the existing coating is flaking, peeling, or incompatible, it should be removed before application.

Q: How much coverage can I expect from SPO Floor Paint?

A: SPO Floor Paint provides approximately 13-15 m² per litre per coat, depending on surface porosity and texture. A 2.5L tin covers 32.5-37.5 m², while a 5L tin covers 65-75 m². For a typical 50 m² garage floor with 2 coats, you would need approximately 7-8 litres total. Porous or rough surfaces may require more paint. We recommend ordering 10-15% extra for surface variation and touch-ups.
