1. What is SPO Two-Pack Epoxy Floor Paint used for?
SPO Two-Pack Epoxy Floor Paint is a water-based, solvent-free epoxy designed for high-traffic industrial and commercial floors subjected to forklifts, vehicles, trucks, vans, or heavy foot traffic. It provides long-lasting abrasion resistance, making it ideal for warehouses, factories, garages, loading bays, and industrial floors.
2. What makes this different from single-pack floor paints?
Two-pack epoxy systems cure through a chemical reaction between base and hardener, creating a much harder, more durable finish than single-pack paints. This delivers forklift-proof protection, superior chemical resistance, and significantly longer lifespan. Single-pack paints dry through evaporation and cannot match the performance of two-pack epoxies.
3. Is this a water-based or solvent-based epoxy?
This is a water-based two-pack epoxy with very low VOC content (< 10 g/L) and minimal odour. Unlike solvent-based epoxies that have strong fumes and require extensive ventilation, this water-based system is safe for occupied warehouses and workshops. It's also non-flammable.
4. Can I use this paint outdoors?
Yes. While primarily designed for interior industrial or commercial floors, you can also apply it outdoors on stable concrete, asphalt, tarmac, or other suitable substrates. Ensure the surface is clean, dry, prepared properly and in good condition before painting. It withstands British weather conditions.
5. How long does it take to dry and cure?
Touch dry in 4 hours, hard dry in 8-12 hours at 20°C. You can apply a second coat after minimum 16 hours (overnight). Light foot traffic is safe after 24 hours, but allow 5-7 days for full cure before subjecting the floor to heavy forklift traffic or chemical exposure. Drying times may be longer in cooler temperatures or high humidity.
6. Is a primer necessary before applying this epoxy floor paint?
Yes, we recommend applying SPO Two-Pack Floor Primer & Sealer to seal porous surfaces like concrete, masonry, or tarmac. This improves adhesion and prevents excessive absorption. Shiny surfaces like glazed tiles should also be primed with Coo-Var ProSeal High Performance Primer. Proper priming ensures maximum durability and performance.
7. How do I mix the two-pack system?
Mix each tin individually first for 2 minutes each using using a slow-speed electric mixer. Then pour the Base component into the Hardener container and mix thoroughly using a slow-speed electric mixer for 2-3 minutes. Add up to 500ml of clean water per 5kg unit and mix again. Once mixed, pot life is 2-4 hours at 20°C. Do not mix more than you can apply within the pot life.
8. Can I customize the colour?
Yes. SPO Two-Pack Epoxy Floor Paint is available in 6 standard colours (Tile Red, Yellow, Light Grey, Green, Black, White) and can be tinted to over 2,000 RAL, BS, and NCS shades. A minimum order quantity may apply for custom tints. Contact our team via live chat for custom colour orders.
9. How should I apply it for best results?
Use a brush or short-pile roller (6-10mm nap). Mix the two components thoroughly according to instructions, adding up to 500ml of water per 5kg unit. Apply thin, even coats. Proper surface prep—cleaning, degreasing, etching, priming, and repairing cracks—is crucial for a smooth, durable finish. Always apply 2 coats for heavy-duty performance.
10. What coverage can I expect?
Coverage is approximately 6-10 m² per kg (30-50 m² per 5kg unit per coat), depending on surface porosity and texture. A 5kg unit covers 30-50 m² per coat. For a typical 40 m² warehouse section with 2 coats, you'll need approximately two 5kg units. Porous concrete may require more paint.
11. Can I add anti-slip aggregate?
Yes. For enhanced grip in wet or oily environments, scatter anti-slip aggregate between the first and second coat. This is perfect for loading bays, vehicle traffic areas, and wet environments. Contact us for anti-slip aggregate recommendations.
